Contribution Types Overview

Contribution Types provides a way to categorize contributions for reporting and accounting purposes. These are also referred to as Funds. You may set up as many types as needed. Each type can carry an accounting code which can be used to map contributions to codes in your accounting system. Commonly used contribution types are: Donation, Campaign Contribution, Membership Dues, etc.

Setup Contribution Types

Begin at the Administer CiviCRM page. In the CiviContribute section, choose Contribution Types.

You will see a list of existing contribution types. You can create a NEW contribution type or Edit, Disable or Delete EXISTING contribution types using the links to the right of each type.

To enter a New Contribution Type, click on the >>New Contribution Type link at the bottom of the list of types.

Type in the Name, Description and Accounting Code. Check the Tax Deductible? box if the contribution type is tax deductible. You can enable/disable the option by checking or unchecking the box labeled Enabled?

Click Save to save the contribution type.

If successful, you will see the message:

The contribution type "In-kind" has been saved.

For EXISTING contribution types you can Edit, Disable or Delete each option using the links to the right of each contribution type.

Selecting Edit will bring you to the Edit Contribution Type page where you can change the Name, Description, Accounting Code and Tax Deducible? status for each option. Here you can also enable/disable the contribution type by checking or unchecking the box labeled Enabled?

Click Save to save the contribution type.

If successful, you will see the message:

The contribution type "Campaign Contribution" has been saved.

Select Disable to temporarily disable an existing contribution type. You will see the warning:

"Are you sure you want to disable this contribution type?"

Click OK to continue or Cancel to cancel disabling the contribution type.

To re-enable the contribution type, simply click on Enable.

Disable before Delete

If you have begun using a particular contribution type and contributions have been received under this type, it is best to Disable this type rather than Delete it. If you must delete the contribution type, then you will need to use Find Contributions to locate all contributions which use this type and either update the contribution type or delete the contribution.

Select Delete to delete the contribution type. You will be given this warning:

WARNING: Deleting this option will result in the loss of all contribution records of this type. This may mean the loss of a substantial amount of data, and the action cannot be undone. Do you want to continue?

Click Delete to continue or Cancel to cancel the deletion.
