Common Import Errors

Most import errors are a result of invalid formatting or unexpected data.

Whenever there is an error/problem with a particular record row, the Import Errors file shows a row for that record which starts with the Record Number (so you can find the problem record in the original file), and the next column is "Reason" - the reason the record was rejected.

For example, if there is an error with date formatting, the Reason for all rows with that errror will be shown as: "Invalid value for field(s) : Receive Date".

When you get an error during an import, check for these common errors:

Contribution, Membership or Participant Import - No Matching Contact

Importing contributions, memberships or event participant records require that a contact record already exists. The contribution etc. is matched to the contact making the contribution during the import. If no matching contact is found, the Reason for the import error will look like this:

"No matching Contact found for (Jane Doe )"

Membership Import - Required Parameter Missing

Membership record imports must have a membership type field containing data that is consistent with the membership types defined in the CiviCRM administration > CiviMember > membership types page. Missing data or non-matching data will yield a "required parameter missing" error after attempted import.
