Tags are used to categorize Individuals, Organizations, and/or Household contacts.
Once created, tags are available to all contact types (Individual, Organization, Household). You can NOT create tags that are ONLY for use with, for example, Individual contacts.
Tags are not available for use with other types of records such as activities or events.
For example, you could use tags to let constituents indicate which of your programs they are most interested in (Child Care, Parenting Skills Classes, etc.). Tags are first pre-defined through Administer CiviCRM and only then can they be applied to contacts.
Tags are searchable and can be the basis of a Smart Groups.
