Can I rename things?

Yes, using translation, as described in CiviCRM Localisation . For example you could create a "translation" which transforms "Contribution" to "Payment."

NOTE: l10n is L 10 N localization, that is, L followed by 10 letters followed by N.
Similarly i18n is I 18 N internationalization, that is, I followed by 18 letters followed by N.
