"Asterisk integration holds many promises, aldon points some out below.
I love the idea of people calling in "pod casts" that become available
on the website immediately. I love the idea of regular people being
able to record a GOTV reminder to their friends and family the day
before the election and dropping it as a robo call"

WOW! I love this idea! Instead of the "email 10 friends" when someone is done taking action, have them enter in the phone numbers of ten friends, give them a phone number and access code to call into, record a personalized message, and blam, instant credibility with no worry of spam features. So long as the callers voice is the first thing heard and not some pre-recorded junk, the response rates would be fantastic.
Second that with the ability to "schedule" personalized election day wake up calls. Kinda like how one of the major retailers scheduled celebrity wake up calls on thanksgiving last year. Not only could this be a great GOTV tool, it could really be a good volunteer management tool.
I forsee something like:
Field director selects list of attendees for upcoming event.
Selects "Schedule Reminder Call" in CiviCRM.
Calls in to specific number and account code and records reminder message.
punches in date code in telephone scheduling delivery time
Punches in option to reply using touch tone phone, ie 1 for will be there, 2 for can't make it.
Volunteers get the reminder call.
CiviCRM updated with people who confirmed, backed out, or asked to be called back.
Field director logs back onto CiviCRM, retrieves list of requested call backs and begins calling.
