No option for "Other" in the extracurricular drop-downs

3

Danny

I re-designed the drop-downs for the extracurricular section of the app, and there are supposed to be an "Other" option at the bottom of every drop-down of every category. This applies to all 3 levels.
Also, there should be a prompt for the URL of the club / activity / org under the "Additional Information" space.

5

can you please switch the ordering of the years in the drop-down menu
when it prompts for your date of birth at registration?

Second question on Financial Aid Mini-course " Which of the following is true of the CSS PROFILE?" should have checkboxes for multiple selections instead of the radio buttons that are currently provided.

3

Qin Zhi

Since there are two answers to that question, there should not be radio buttons, which only allow one choice to the question. Checkboxes, like question 1 would solve it.

7

First question on FinAid Mini-course " Check as many of the following that are true of the FAFSA:  *" won't allow be to proceed regardless of which boxes I mark as correct, thus leaving student stuck on that page with no way to proceed.

3

Qin Zhi

Some way needs to be changed.

8

First question on "Choosing a College Quiz" is " Which of the following is not a difference between liberal arts colleges and research universities?" and the answer is "Professors at liberal arts colleges tend to be drawn to the idea of teaching undergraduates, not just doing research. " which is wrong. The answer should be Liberal arts colleges tend to have smaller campuses and smaller classes than research universities.

3

Qin Zhi

Swap answers.
From Nancy: I noted this too QZ. I think the other option (to get the pre-set button to work still) is to rephrase that sentence this way: "Professors at liberal arts colleges tend to be just as drawn to the idea of teaching undergraduates as they are to research."

9

It's impossible to get through and submit ANY of the mini-courses. Clicking submit, even with the right answers selected, does nothing at all.

<SAME URL AS ABOVE> Please give the option of instead of just "Chinese American," "Korean American," etc... have the option of "Chinese/Chinese American," "Korean/Korean American." I've spoken to a few permanent residents from Asian countries (myself included) who are not "American" but still wish to identify ourselves as Asian. Incl. "Other Asian/Asian American." Along those line, South Asian and South Asian American should be combined.

_Print Application_ may confuse some students. They will assume they can print out the application, fill it out, and somehow send it back in. We should consider placing the link to print somewhere else - possibly in the 'My application' section with some text next to it stating that students will not be able to  send in printed applications.

On the Work Experience Page - the "When do you work" radio button and free form textbox question "To what have you put these earnings?" doesn't appear until after I've inputted a job and pressed Save.  After I hit Save, it gives me an error message - and only then does the radio buttons and box appear.  It is not very elegant.

In the Household section, we should not be asking  "If your household circumstances have adversely impacted your education or your performance in school, please describe. (255 character limit)"    Please comment out that question.

Tim

28

I think that this has been listed before but I'll go ahead and list it again: "Further Description (optional)" box on the Extracurricular information portion is not optional and will not allow me to continue to the next page without filling it out.

3

Cassandra

29

The household information portion only allows you to list three siblings.

non-issue, you can only list the number of siblings as you have selected how many siblings you have

Cassandra

Perhaps have a button that allows you to "Add another sibling" for those who come from large families. (big grin)

30

In the Find School part, aside from not being able to choose your school, I couldn't find Southern Regional High School (which is in New Jersey). I tried finding another school (Mayfield Senior School in Pasadena) and this was found.  Perhaps the school of the particular applicant just wasn't in the database.

3

Cassandra

31

The SAT II score box has no limit, which can lead to mistakes just in case people press the wrong buttons, etc. the score will be recorded inaccurately.

Cassandra

32

Also, in the short essays/essay boxes, pressing "enter" on the key board (ie: to start another paragraph) counts as one word.

33

Under race/ethnicity ID section, one choice is Arabic/Middle Eastern. It should say "Arab" not Arabic. Arabic is only used for the language and not a race or ethnicity. Also, Iranians, Kurds, etc. are not Arab. So the best possible ID (if space allows) that would not privilege one group over another would be: Middle Eastern (Arab, Iranian, Kurd, etc.)

Nancy

NH: Sometimes the US govt. makes their own categories (which can be wrong) so we should use the original only if this is somehow keyed to standard census data. But it is a glaring error.

34

In the personal info section we ask for mother's/father's country of "birth and childhood" as if they are always both the same. Perhaps we should write this as birth/childhood. (This would allow for instances where a parent was born in one place but left as an infant, thus did not spend childhood in that country. It would also create more options for unique examples such as refugees.)

1

Nancy

NH: We shouldn't assume these are one and the same.

35

In the pre-app test, I was confused by the use of double negatives in this question: "Which of the following is not a difference between liberal arts colleges and research universities?"
To keep the preset response buttons the same, perhaps we can change it to: "Which of the following statements are false when comparing the differences between a liberal arts college and a research univ, ersity?"

3

Nancy

NH: Logically this also doesn't make sense because the double negatives translate into: "how are these 2 types of institutions the same," which is not the question that the responses are set up to answer.

36

To take #35 a step further,I think it's confusing to have 2 sentences in one of the statements when it would sound better anyway to have it as one sentence:

"I think the first Liberal arts colleges only have undergraduate students. Research universities have both undergraduate and graduate students." INSTEAD, it might be more clear to tweak (and combine) it to say:
"Liberal arts colleges only have undergraduate students, while research universities have both undergraduate and graduate students."

Nancy

37

In the Career Interests section, I notice there's space for one more item. Would it make sense to add "High Tech" (I realize this is an adjective but so is "business") or at least put in one option for computer-savvy types who are interested in this area for a potential career?

Left as is

Nancy

NH: Again, maybe you're using pre-set census-type data labels and this isn't an option.

38

Under Household Income: Should we be more suggestive about extenuating circumstance?  We could add to it this way: "Extenuating circumstances[/financial obligations/health-care costs that might designate you] as low-income even though... "

q removed

Nancy

NH: The language "allow you to qualify for" doesn't sound like the best choice of words.

39

There's a blue bar to click on after the first short answer request, called: "Avoid common mistakes". I reluctantly went there to find what actually turned out to be a good reminder. Maybe we ought to make this more enticing by changing the negative language to: "Click here for a helpful hint." I, for one, am more drawn to positive language. I only clicked it because we are testing everything. Honestly, I think I might not have done this as an applicant.

Left as is

Nancy

40

Under the achievements section, where a scroll-down bar offers pre-set labels, I think it would make more sense to replace the wording on the button that says: "Click here to find the achievement" with "Click here to find the appropriate description."

Left as is

Nancy

NH: This might make more sense, since some of what we are looking for are "positions held" and other identifying characteristics that are not 'achievements' per say.

41

I notice you can only click and list 2 "achievements" for any given Achievement. Is this enough?

Left as is

Nancy

NH: Has anyone else noticed how the language is redundant? We have them list their achievements within their achievements. We could use the word "accomplishments" to diversify the language somewhat.

42

I notice that the presets only allow the applicant to identify one instrument they play in a music group. This is true of all of the ID selection buttons as far as I could tell. Is there a way to offer them a chance to press the shift key to highlight more than one? I tried this to see if it was already set up to work this, but it's not.

Left as is

Nancy

NH: If we add this feature, we of course want to find a way to indicate that they can select more than one by using the shift key.

43

The automatic word count in the short answer sections did not always come on when I cut and paste something from a word document. It seemed to work at random for me.

We'd like to be sure that students receive all of our future emails (and make sure that they're checking this email address). I'd suggest changing the first paragraph to say:
You should receive your registration email within a few minutes. If you do not see an email from QuestBridge in your Inbox after a few minutes, please also check your "Bulk" or "Spam" folder. If the message was sent to your Spam folder, please add "help@questbridge.org" and "questions@questbridge.org" to your approved contacts list, so you won't miss out on future important emails from us.

Inaccurate "My Locker" page instructions

Changed according to Tim's wording already

Karen

Currently we say "There are four parts to the 2008 QuestBridge National College Match Application. All four parts must be completed by September 30, 2008 11:59 pm PST"
Corrected version could say something like:
"The College Match Mini-Courses, My Application, and Teacher Recommendation sections must be completed by September 30, 2008 11:59 pm PST."

Financial Aid Mini-Course, misleading information

"Very wealthy private colleges offer grants based purely on need (how much your family is able to pay)..." I would say "Some colleges offer grants based purely on need...", because it is not only the very wealthy private colleges who do that.

Under extenuating circumstances: it was worded, if a parent "has substance abuse" but it would be better phrased as "suffers from substance abuse" to be more accurate. Another problem is that when I clicked back on the button that says "examples" to look over some others, I couldn't get back to that page.

Under Household Info, THIS SOUNDS CONFUSING: "list the other members in this household along with their relationship to you in parentheses following their names. Please separate members with commas. (e.g. - Jane Doe (aunt), William Doe (brother))". INSTEAD, TRY: "List members of your household, followed by relationship to you in parentheses; use comma between entries."

3

Nancy

60

Under sibling info, instead of "Highest level of schooling", would it be better to write: "highest level of education"?

3

Nancy

61

Under "Academic Info" I would combine the idea of the last sentence into the first and economize elsewhere with words. Also, let's change the word "may," as this is not optional.

PRESENT VERSION: "You need to enter information about your recommender before proceeding with this section. Please remember that you will need to give your recommender enough time to complete a recommendation before the deadline. You may enter recommender information in the Teacher Recommendation section of your My Locker page. You will have to enter information of 3 recommenders before you proceed with this section." CAN WE DO THIS in the first sentence:
"You need to enter information about 3 recommenders before proceeding with this section. Please give your recommenders sufficent time to complete their recommendation before the deadline. You will enter your recommender information in the Teacher Recommendation section of your My Locker page."

Nancy

62

Under academic info, last line: change "top college" to "top-tier college" to be consistent with our typical language.

3

Nancy

63

Under Testing Information/learn more about how test scores are used: I would suggest changing what I've pointed to in the first bracket with suggestions in the next bracket as a way to refine the language.

Test scores are not everything. All of our partner colleges read your [whole] [entire] application, including essays, and base their admissions decisions [off of] [on] your application as a whole, not just your SAT or ACT scores. If your scores are not strong, you won't be disregarded. Rather your application reader will look at all of the other portions of the application to determine if you would be able to handle the academic rigor of a top [-tier] college. Application readers [will] [will also] [look for the answer to this question in many areas of your application, including your] [judge your academic preparedness based] on teacher recommendations, transcript, and essays. If you aren't satisfied with your scores, that is a good reason to prove your thinking and writing skills through working extra hard on your essays.

    Lookup is broken
NOTE: I think this is only because I hand't yet filled in teacher rec forms.
Would it make sense to let me input my HS first, so I can look up my teachers easier? We could also allow an option to use a teacher from a different school, and tell them that this may be a bad idea, but let them give a 50 character reason why they are using this teacher vs. a teacher at their school.
Also, when I click save and next on the page before HS information, could it take me to the Recommender page, rather than making me feel like I'm doing something wrong when I can't input my HS information?

Suggestion: maybe we shouldn't include so many options in the credits drop down menu under high school transcript. Full and Partial Credit may be sufficient.

Essay section: Going over the word limit removes all formatting.

College Ranking: You can click 'I do not wish to participate in the College Match process..." but still have colleges with numbers next to them when you click submit. We need to make sure that this does not confuse us somehow (either store data correctly as in no rankings, remove numbers when clicking 'I do not...', throw an error).
Also, you can rank colleges without using all the numbers, ie. Rice 1, Pomona 6, that's it if the box is checked, but not otherwise.
Finally, we say 'Edit the rankings of your favourite colleges' - this should be at minimum changed to '...favorite....' and should consider changing it further to accurately reflect what they will be doing. (Something like 'Click here to edit your National College Match college rankings'

    College Rankings:
Were we going to have them sign off again about the binding nature?
Also, can we make them confirm if they are opting out of the match?

teacher recs don't open in a new window

    Application Forwarding:
"QuestBridge will not forward any applications after this time.Questbridge's forwarding your application does ensure that your application is complete. " - should be a space between sentences.

It is saying that I have no recommendees on file.

    Recommendations:

First of all, the process of setting up a recommender account is very difficult when using development.qb.org. It doesn't seem like this will be a problem, however, once everything is switched to application.qb.org. For any testers reading this - you have to log out of your student account and then set up a new account on development.qb - the instructions are wrong.

Similar to Karens comment above about student account creation, for recommenders we say "The e-mail address is not made public and will only be used if you wish to receive a new password or wish to receive certain news or notifications by e-mail." but we do email them in the future to recommend more students.

It seems strange that we have the student fill out the teachers name, email, relationship, etc and then have the educator fill it out again on their own. Would it make sense to have it prepopulated, and if changes need to be made, it will update the students entries as well? EX. student types in ms. smith and ms_smith@yahoo.com. ms. smith logs on, changes her name to susan smith and susan_smith@yahoo.com. what is going to be the final result of this?

Can entering a recommender's email automatically generate an email with instructions, rather than making the student give it to them?
Additionally, maybe we could change the format (and instructions) to allow educators to enter a student for recommending (using a pre-existing account and a students ID number, which would be printed out in the instructions - maybe this would require confirmation from the student). This way, we could avoid unnecessary educator duplicates.

I selected teacher as relationship, but I still was asked questions that seem like they should be for counselors (gpa, rank, etc). (the student signed this account up as a counselor)

ACADEMIC RECORD SECTION: List the AP courses: what if there are more than 6? Would it be better to ask how many are offered, rather than listing the ones they have?

GPA: it says dont enter spaces, but doesn't complain when i do. Also, there is no check to see if weighted is higher or the same as unweighted.

GPA: #s associated with letters: not all schools do this in the first place. second, if i put in letters, it complains and says 1-5, but if i put in a high number (12) there is no complaint.

Rank: weighted and unweighted have to be the same. this can be a problem if they only do one, or only include students from certain tracks in the calculations. also, it doesnt complain if the rank is higher than the total class size.

Ranking period: no checking to see if begin date is before end date

students sharing rank: no check to see if its within the size of the class. doesnt accept characters (na)

percentage going to 2/4 year college: no check on 100 limit (1500% going to 4 year worked ok), characters dont work (na)

STUDENT RANKING PAGE - name of page doesn't really make sense. something like personal evaluation might make more sense

how long have you known this student: text box. it should only allow #s, maybe a drop down?

As we do for students, should we have the recommender's locker page have a green 'submitted' rather than just a complete?

When filling out the form, at top it says " Please note: the Recommendations deadline is March 31, 2008. ( * = required field)" this should be updated.

In the evaluation section for teachers, in the field "Please indicate which of the following factors have most influenced this students academic success, and provide a brief explanation. (150 words max) *" - if you click other, a red asterisk pops up but there is no room to do or write anything. Additionally, if you click this 'Other' you cannot go forward to the next section, unless you unclick it.

After completing the rec form, if i click view app it opens up a page that says 'QuestBridge College Match Student Application'. Should it say 'QuestBridge College Match Teacher Evaluation'?

Last comment (I hope) - Banner is different than that of the rest of the site? Is this on purpose or should this be changed?

I'm doing this in the comments section since I am getting errors doing it the other way with other people editing the document as well. - Jacob
