Multiple contact subtypes
At the moment a contact can only be one subtype and that can never change. This can cause problems down the track, for example, when a teacher becomes a parent or vice versa. This initiative is to allow contacts to have more than one subtype and for their subtype to change (with some sensible rules about what happens to custom data for a subtype they previously belonged to)
Multiple contact sub-types have been implemented in 4.1.0 (though the main documentation doesn't yet show that as of this additional comment of mine - April 30, 2012).
