 | This is the home page for the Melbourne Developers' Boot Camp which will take place on April 20 / 21 |
Pre-work
The Boot Camps do not have a fixed agenda. The focus is on learning by doing - working on things that people want to learn, solving real-life client/user organization problems when possible, and implementing code for items on the current release roadmap.
In order the the event to be successful and useful - we need all participants to do the following prior to the camp.
1. Please read the following for background information
2. Please ensure that you have PHP 5.2.x and MySQL 5.0.x installed and running on your laptops. It would be good to also have a checkout of "v2.0 branch" installed and running from SVN.
- If you need help, please contact us on IRC (#civicrm) and/or post on the forums.
3. Create a personal agenda page by clicking your linked name / org name below
Your agenda should list specific topics you want to learn more about AND at least one actual "project" or client-related requirement/problem you want to solve (or at least make some progress on). Your project(s) can be taken from the 2.1 roadmap (things you or your clients really need) - or things that you've come up against. They can involve using the APIs or hooks in a separate module to handle a specific requirement, OR modifying / extending core CiviCRM code. Check out the agendas from the previous 2 boot camps if you need more ideas: TechSoup Developers' Boot Camp - Dec 2007, Developer Boot Camp Dec 10,11 - 2007, Developer's Boot Camp (New Orleans) - March 2008
Location, Time and Fees
- We will be meeting at offices of CSF at the corner of William and Bourke Streets -the AMP Tower - Level 1 - 535 Bourke Street Melbourne VIC 3000. Thanx to Robert Clancy for volunteering the space and making the arrangements.
- The training will run from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm with an hour or so for lunch.
- We will try to schedule a CiviCRM meetup the evening prior to the bootcamp or the evening after the bootcamp. More as we figure things out. Here is a link to the Blog post for CiviCRM meetup with suggestion for South Melbourne Venue at 6PM on the Mon evening (approx 10-20 minute cab ride depending on traffic)
- The fees for the training will be AUD 1000 / person. We prefer payment via PayPal. If this is not an option, we will figure out other methods.

Thanks for setting up this Wiki page. Couple of things I would like clarification on please.
The dates are: April Sunday 20th / Monday 21st
Does this mean that it is a two day workshop with meetings on both days from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and a meetup on either the Saturday or the Monday evening?
Or is it a one day workshop with the other day for a meetup meeting?
Please clarify (I'm feeling a little dense here
Also, are you going to provide a Paypal link or account details please.
Thanks so much!
Adding>>> Here is a link to a Google map of the venue and an accommodation suggestion...
Hi Diane - The workshop runs for two days. We're waiting for the verification step to complete on our PayPal account now and I will post details next week.

Would love to know when the meetup will be - keen to book tickets to suit.
Cheers!
update I booked tickets to arrive Thurs and depart early Tues, so am hoping for a meetup dinner beforehand not after
I will be bringing a laptop with either Ubuntu 7.10 or Fedora Core 8 running under VMWare. I have not yet installed Drupal/CiviCRM yet but I am afraid I may experience performance problems. The laptop is running Windows XP. Is it feasible to install in Windows?
Please do install Ubuntu and get a working CiviCRM install on it. We'd like to avoid spending a lot of time on install issues
. We are more familiar with *nix based systems, so thats a better alternative (IMO)
Yes sir!
Next question...any particular reason you would recommend Ubuntu over FC? I am more familiar with FC.
we have more experience with ubuntu than redhat. i also know that some civimail perl packages have some issues with Redhat. so we might be able to help u better with ubuntu
but basically all we need is apache2+mysql5+php5 and folks knowing how to edit and maninpulate the config settings for each of them (at a high level)

Hi All, well this event is coming up fast! I am not sure if I should have (not being experienced with Wiki) but I have added a link in the section "Location, Time and Fees" to the Blog post about the CiviCRM meetup.
Also, whenever are we going to get to PAY!
My page for "Personal Agenda" is a bit of a mess, but time is running out to do much more about it...looking forward to meeting with you all!
Diane - looking forward to meeting you too. We'll send out invoices after the session - so no worries on that. Heading to the airport now for flight to oz
