CiviCRM version 1.6 has been evaluated by a third party for compliance with Section 508 § 1194.22 paragraphs (a) through (p).

To accomplish this, CiviCRM engaged Brian Reed, a San-Francisco based consultant specializing in web accessibility issues. Brian has over 10 years experience in web development and has been specializing in web accessibility issues for over 5 years. He recently designed and wrote a 2-day course in web accessibility for web developers in conjunction with Design Media of San Francisco. In 2006 he trained over 250 web developers working for the State of California using this course material.

While no level of assessment can guarantee a perfect level of accessibility, CiviCRM has undergone a detailed accessibility review at the code level. While standard accessibility checkers such as "Bobby" were used for simple 'first-cut' analysis, more detailed reviews were done for each of the 16 requirements. As a result of this analysis of version 1.5, version 1.6 has incorporated code adjustments to close gaps in some accessibility requirements. While a small number of issues remain open - for example, those due to Drupal or Joomla code - CiviCRM remains committed to further enhancing the accessibility of the product.

Engagement of the community remains paramount. Those accessing CiviCRM using alternative browsers such as JAWS or Braille browsers are encouraged to provide feedback.

A detailed assessment of version 1.6 against each of the 16 requirements is provided in the table attached.
