I think the ACTION will get a little getting used to, not sure that it's placement/function is very intuitive. And to echo my other comments, the list should look like:
checkbox name address/csz email phone
to help distinguish similar names from each other, and make it easy to select the correct one.

New version incorporates Bob S feedback on row contents, and exposes the 'most common' actions as buttons to help make the 'Actions' concept more apparent.

Hi I'm new here so please forgive if I have made this comment in the wrong place.
When I first saw this page as my "default entry page" I was a) a little confused and b) thrown off by it. While a search is a fine place to start, I don't envision MY and MY ORGANIZATION's use of the CRM to solely be relegated to search and modification of particular contact. Therefore, for me, I would
1) prefer to be able to regulate what the default page looks like (similar to being able to choose blocks in regular Civicspace): For instance, one of the things I had envisioned being able to use CivicCRM was to create an online, public directory of local environmental & other nonprofit and social change oriented groups. This was not to be its sole usage however, since we might also use it schedule internal meetings within our own organization (SRSF) and/or use it as the contact database to upload contact information into our events calendar (in CivicSpace, check out http://www.thedirt.org to see what I mean) which lists events from more than 200 organizations in the Portland area.
I was hoping that the CivicCRM aspect might act as a timesaver aspect for the organizers I work with so that they could enter their contact information 1x and then just update as need be should their information change. But that CivicCRM could act like a v-card that Civicspace Events Calendar could pull from once a user had logged in and was in the act of submitting an event so that they didn't have to re-enter the same information repeatedly for each event.
Already that is two different views that would present themselves now: 1 for me as Admin of SRSF (umbrella mega-data organization that is creating the network) 1 for Organizer to view and/or modify their organization's contact information (SO I DON'T HAVE TO DO THIS, ONLY EDIT IF THEY MESS UP).
Lastly then, I would add a 3rd view for a general reader who wants to actually FIND an organization to participate with, figure out what their mission is, when they have regularly scheduled meetings and GET INVOLVED. For these users I would envision their primary interest in using the CivicCRM would be to view a list of all participating organizations, and also to have a search option available - but I would put it more off to the side in a side bar for them similar to the way that Amazon.com has a search option for books, and the airline ticket companies like Hotwire.com allow you to modify your search if you don't see what you looking for listed in the main part of the page.
Maybe these options exist and I am just not comprehending how to create what I need/want to see? If so or if you want to correct me on where I should have placed this comment please advise by sending an email to laura AT spreadingroots DOT org Thanks Laura
